Palin, Rubes and the Rage of the Left

I ran into an acquaintance last week at church, an ex-Presbyterian pastor. There’s a bit of a difference in our ideology - if Eugene Debs or Noam Chomsky were running for president he’d campaign for them - but our banter is generally friendly as we tease each other about who’s had the latest letter published in The Oregonian. He said he nearly had one published, but the one that was published was better: The difference between Sarah Palin and Dick Cheney? Lipstick.
I laughed because it’s so patently silly - at the very least Palin’s a better shot - but said “Hah! I love that woman! You may be looking at the first woman president of the United States!”
And the mood palpably changed.
It’s tough to adequately describe visceral hatred, but it was there in the eyes, in the Satanic squint, in the pursed lips, in the reply: “If that awful woman were ever president…” this was spit more than said “…I’d move to another country. I mean it. Move to another country. I can’t stand her.” When I laughed again he stomped away. I never had the chance to offer my services as a realtor.
I honestly don’t get it. Granted, the left’s default mode is anger - it was nearly this bad with Reagan and we’ve had eight years of Bush derangement - but this level of vacant rage is beyond anything I’ve experienced. I had no use for Bill Clinton and think Obama would make perhaps an even worse president than Jimmy Carter, but…hate? No. Nor would I even consider leaving the country if Obama were elected; I’d stay and fight the policies. That’s the nature of a democracy.
Perhaps my friend feels presidential entitlement slipping away; didn’t the left, after all, really win in 2000? And aren’t the elite on the left de facto meant to rule the rubes? How is it a rube is in the position to lead the left? When the answer turns out to be “other rubes”, maybe I’d be mad, too. Damned democracy. So unfair.
Or: Perhaps the fact that she carried baby Trig to term. That’s not the correct choice according to the Bosses of Choice, and the picture of Trig in her arms makes the bosses seem a bit, well, callous. Not nice.
She also hunts and fishes. Ever listened to a PETAfile? Yep. Plenty angry.
Unfortunately, it’s going to get worse, especially with the legacy media fully participating in the antipathy. A hacker breaks into Palin’s private email, posts on the web - and calls - her daughter’s cell phone number, and all the AP can say is “The disclosure Wednesday raises new questions about the propriety of the Palin administration’s use of nongovernment e-mail accounts to conduct state business.”, then refuses cooperation with the Secret Service in the investigation.
So what are McCain and Palin going to do? Smile. Wave.
And win.

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you down the road!
And I noticed that Ron Ares has removed your link…why?
Keating 5, anyone, or is your head in the sand still?
Phil Gramm still think this chaos just all in our heads?
Keep dreaming, ignorance is bliss!
Aren’t you selling shoes?
>And I noticed that Ron Ares has removed your link…why?
You’d have to ask Ron for the definitive answer, but I can make an informed guess:
I’ve become overtly political - a passion of mine; Ron wants to keep everything real estate related. He’s doing well with both his sites, and I don’t blame him in the least.
Besides, as I’ve said often, he’s much nicer than I am, and when you’re political you tend to draw commenters and comments that drift toward the infantile.
Discussing McCain’s role in the S & L crisis in not infantile.
Stating Palin is comparable to Cheney is the most ignorant statement yet!
While browsing various housing blogs I came across this little tidbit on an Orange County RE blog. By the way, thus far in September, OC sales are up 29.1% over last year…”the resulting buying slump has meant that, as of Sept. 8, the median selling price is down 28.1% vs. a year ago and $199,000, or 31%, below the peak of $645,000 hit in June 2007.”
Maybe Portland realtors will be busy once again when prices drop in line with incomes.
And now for the tidbit:

McCain’s role in S&L collapse rouses bitter memories

I’ve filed this story on the hard feelings still harbored toward John McCain by county residents involved the collapse of Irvine-based Lincoln Savings and Loan in the late 1980s. Investors, mostly senior citizens, lost $240 million. McCain was one of the Keating Five, a group of senators who received more than $1 million in Keating contributions and intervened on Lincoln owner Charlie Keating’s behalf.
Jack …
49% of the home sales in CA last month were foreclosures. Our prices need to drop - and will - but our exposure suggests we’ll never hit that level.
As to McCain and the Keating Five: Aside from the thoroughly flimsy connection to the current crisis, you’ll find the reason Obama’s friends in the MSM aren’t reaching for the Keating Five handle is A) Robert Bennett, Clinton impeachment attorney and chief counsel investigating the Keating Five, has said - repeatedly - that McCain did nothing wrong. He suggested at the time that McCain be dropped from the investigation, refused because McCain was the only Republican and the Dems needed cover. The panel itself, in the final draft, said McCain (and John Glenn) were guilty only of a lapse in judgement.
And B): If the media brings us such a tenuous relationship re McCain, they’ll almost be forced to examine the real relationships between Obama and felon Tony Rezko, bigot Jeremiah Wright, terrorist Bill Ayers, and the rest of the Chicago machine.
And that they don’t want to do.
Reading this post inspires me to improve on my writing skills.
What beats liberals in presidential elections is allowing voters to see them as liberals. They run from this because they realize they can’t be who they are and be elected. It’s the same problem every time out.
Reagan undressed Carter. Clinton was given cover by Perot or would’ve lost by 10 points or more. Gore and Kerry speak for themselves. They needed little light to show who they were. Still, both of them sprinted frantically from being labeled as the liberals they were, and still are.
Obama? If he spoke and behaved based upon who he really is, he’d lose worse than Carter did to Reagan. Even with most of the mainstream media behind him, he’s still not gettin’ it done, and they’re becoming almost openly desperate.
The next 30 days are gonna be enlightening. The real question though? Enlightening for whom?
Good stuff, Jeff.
Thanks, Jeff! How’ve you been?
Serious question: Are investors coming back into the RE market in any significant number?
Sorry for the delay, Jeff. The answer to your question is, at least for me, they never left. We’ve helped put at least one builder out of business in three separate cities.
Just this week, we’ve taken on three new clients, all from different parts of the country. We’ve seen no slow down.
